TWNIC Launches Taiwan’s First IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site, Marking a Milestone in Taiwan’s IPv6-Only Development

As the global Internet continues its transition to IPv6, IPv6-only networking is increasingly recognized as the next stage in Internet infrastructure development. To support the modernization of Taiwan’s Internet infrastructure and foster practical understanding of IPv6-only technologies and deployment scenarios, the Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) officially launched the TWNIC IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site on June 6, 2026. The Demo Site provides a real-world IPv6-only networking environment for demonstration, testing, education, and technical exchange, further supporting Taiwan’s advancement toward next-generation Internet infrastructure.

TWNIC deliberately selected Saturday, June 6, 2026 (2026.06.06) as the official launch date. The repeated appearance of the number 6 in the date, together with the designation “D6” (Day 6, Saturday), symbolizes the transition from IPv4 to the IPv6-only era. The launch identifier “2026.06.06::D6” was adopted to commemorate this milestone and highlight Taiwan’s continued commitment to advancing next-generation Internet technologies.

The IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site, which complies with RFC 8781 and RFC 8925, showcases a real-world IPv6-only wireless networking environment. Visitors can experience firsthand how modern IPv6 transition technologies enable seamless Internet connectivity without requiring IPv4 address assignment. In addition to serving as a platform for demonstration and validation, the site will support educational programs, technical exchanges, and practical testing activities, helping stakeholders across government, industry, academia, and the research community gain hands-on experience with IPv6-only networking and its deployment models.

To celebrate the launch, TWNIC has prepared a dedicated “TWNIC IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site Launch” display stand featuring the launch mark “2026.06.06::D6” and the TWNIC logo. The display will be exhibited alongside the demonstration equipment during the launch period as a symbol of this important milestone in Taiwan’s IPv6-only journey.

A series of promotional and educational activities have also been planned to coincide with the launch. On June 4, TWNIC hosted the “TWNIC IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site Showcase and Experience Event,” providing invited participants with an early opportunity to experience the IPv6-only environment and exchange deployment insights. From June 16 to 18, TWNIC and APNIC will jointly organize the “TWNIC–APNIC Joint Training: IPv6 Only/Mostly Workshop,” strengthening IPv6 expertise through international collaboration and hands-on training. In addition, TWNIC plans to hold an “IPv6 Network Upgrade, Emerging Technology Integration, and IPv6-Only Deployment” training program in August. Participants will have the opportunity to experience IPv6-only networking and related applications firsthand while learning from real-world deployment cases and the latest industry developments. TWNIC will continue to share Taiwan’s IPv6-only deployment experiences and achievements with both domestic and international Internet communities, contributing to the broader advancement of IPv6 adoption.

According to TWNIC CEO Jo-Fang Yu, IPv6 is not only the foundation for the continued growth and sustainability of the Internet, but also a key enabler of cloud computing, the Internet of Things (IoT), artificial intelligence (AI), and future digital innovation. As global IPv6 adoption continues to increase, a growing number of governments, international organizations, and leading Internet service providers are investing in IPv6-only deployment initiatives. These developments demonstrate that IPv6-only networking is steadily transitioning from an emerging technical approach to a practical, scalable, and sustainable operational model.

Ms. Yu noted that the establishment of the IPv6-Only Wi-Fi Demo Site is intended not only to provide organizations and individuals with opportunities to observe and experience IPv6-only environments firsthand, but also to lower adoption barriers, facilitate technical exchange, and encourage the sharing of deployment experiences. She stated:

“The future of the Internet will be built on IPv6. Through demonstration environments, training programs, and international collaboration, TWNIC hopes to help Taiwan seize the opportunities presented by next-generation networking technologies. We look forward to working with government agencies, industry partners, academia, and the broader Internet community to advance IPv6-only adoption and build a more resilient, scalable, and future-ready digital infrastructure.”
