Mission

TWNIC is the organizational center for national network information in Taiwan. We cooperate with network information organizations such as ICANN and APNIC as well as equivalent national Internet organizations in other countries, including JPNIC, CNNIC, and KRNIC.

The primary functions and responsibilities of TWNIC are as the right :

  • Providing specialized Internet services, including domain name and IP/ASN registration and management, as well as directory and database access; in addition, promoting Internet business in Taiwan in a spirit of non-profit, mutual and impartial sharing of network resources.
  • Coordinating and facilitating activities and cooperation between national and international Internet-related organizations.
  • Assisting the industry in the promotion of nationwide Internet use, and coordinating the exchange and integration of Internet information services.

The establishment of the Taiwan Network Information Center (TWNIC) falls into the following three major stages :

1994

March 1994 to June 1996- the Taiwan Network Information Center 2-Year Experimental Program;

1996

Network Information Center under the Computer Society of the ROC (CSROC); June 1996 to April 1998-operation fo the Taiwan

1998

April 1998 to December 1999-on April 1998, the NII decided the Directorate-General of Telecom-munication was the authority of the TWNIC to draw up budget for helping the Center to trans- form into a corporation. The TWNIC was officially completed the corporation registration on 29 December 1999.

Organizational Structure

Primary decision-making responsibility at TWNIC lies with the Board of Directors and Supervisors, which oversees the main committees. These committees are responsible for domain names, IP addresses and protocol, international affairs, and network security respectively. Regular operations are carried out by five departments: the Department of Domain Name Services, the Department of Internet Resource Services, the Department of International Affairs and Public Relations, the Department of Administration, and the Department of Technological Support.
